5 most important skills of the future

01.04.2024 by Aneta Wodarz-Krasnodębska
As we all know, the entire IT industry, technologies such as AI are developing so fast that sometimes it’s hard to keep up with it all. Sometimes I catch myself thinking that something has been on the market for a while and I just missed it. Regardless of whether you work in IT or do something else, whether you like it or not, you have no choice but to deal with it somehow and just keep up with the development of the world.
Technical development and process automation are inevitable. This is already happening, and perhaps soon there will be a verification of the demand for some jobs. Of course, it is still required to improve the technical competence of employees, but it is often forgotten why and for whom the development of technology is for. At the end and beginning of every process there is a human being and as long as humanity exists, soft skills will continue to be important and necessary to coexist with another human being. Maybe in the future we will reach a stage when soft skills will be even more important than technical ones, because technical ones will be replaced by technologies? I don’t know, I can’t predict the future, but I’m sure that it’s worth looking at what skills will allow us to function effectively in the future, both in private life and at work.
So what soft skills will be important in IT in the coming years?
Communication
The simplest, the easiest and more and more often forgotten. We live in more and more dynamic times, there is more and more happening, we work hard, we do not have time and we focus on many things at the same time, forgetting that relationships with other people and how we communicate with them have a very large impact on our lives and what we finally achieve. You can be the biggest introvert in the world, work nights and avoid human contact, but there will always be someone you need to communicate with. Sooner or later you will have to express your thoughts or share your ideas. Whether it will be teammates and Project Manager, whether it will be a demo for the client, there will be some form of contact with another person. If you will only be able to write to others without having to speak, remember that this is also a way of communication that should be at the right level. If you do not forget about your communication skills, and you develop them at the same time, you will achieve a lot in the coming years.
Ability to work in a team
This is a skill closely related to point 1. In most IT companies, you work in project teams where everyone has their own tasks, but also has to communicate about these tasks with the rest of the team. If the team does not work well together, there is no chance of achieving any business goals, and there is nothing to hide, that’s what projects are for and that’s why we all have jobs. Good cooperation in a team that supports and exchanges knowledge allows you to achieve a lot, both from a business perspective and affects the further development of team members. Why? because apart from the fact that you gain knowledge from others, you also build relationships with your colleagues, sometimes for many years. You never know when and which friend from work will contact you with an idea for a new unicorn, right? Therefore, take care of relationships with people and show yourself as a real partner for cooperation.
Creativity
In IT, this is probably obvious and I assume that since you work in this industry, you must be a creative person. I am convinced that you are one of those people who think outside the box, you are constantly looking for new solutions and, as a result, you contribute to the continuous development of yourself, the project/product and the whole world. Keep it up. I am sure that for many years to come, no machine will be able to replace human creativity and huge imagination.
Adapting to changes
The only constant thing in the world is change and it will never change 😉 Only we can develop the ability to quickly adapt to changes and learn how to adapt to them easily. What helps with this? Certainly, continuous development, learning, reading, getting to know new technologies, tools, work methodologies. Keeping up to date with how the work strategy itself changes over time. Don’t focus on just one area of expertise, even if you are a specialist in your field. Learn new things, be open to even what seems unnecessary or funny now, and expand your skills often enough so that you’re prepared to use them when you least expect them.
Problem-solving
Problems are a normal part of our lives, and at work it is probably a daily routine. There’s always something going on. It seems that problems are not important, especially since technologies help us solve them faster and faster. Despite this, more and more people find it difficult to cope with even the smallest problems. They don’t know what to do, how to do, they panic, they try to run away. If you get into the habit of facing a problem bravely and challenging it, while keeping a calm and analytical mind, you can handle even the worst of things. This approach is very hard to learn, so if I can recommend something, get into the habit of treating the problem as a challenge and see if it helps you. Will technology take over our tasks and work? It’s not a problem, but you need to think about how to use it to your advantage.
Technical skills are very important and in my opinion will never lose value. But is it possible to be the best specialist in your field without any soft skills? Is it possible to somehow compete with technology without developed soft skills? In my opinion, this is not possible. Do you want to get better, develop and have a competitive advantage on the market? Take care of your soft skills and relationships with people – you won’t lose anything and gain a lot.
